Josh Matavesi joined Newcastle Falcons from Ospreys in the summer of 2017, having ended his spell with the Welsh region by helping them reach the Pro 12 semi-finals. Born and raised in Cornwall, Josh's father was a Fijian international who came to settle in the UK, having toured there with the Fijian Barbarians. Josh was called up to train with England Under-20s in 2009 but decided to represent Fiji at the following year's Junior World Championship. Earning his first full international cap for Fiji against Scotland in 2009, he played for his country in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. On the club front, having played his ealy rugby for Cornish clubs Mounts bay and Camborne, he made his professional breatkthrough with Exeter Chiefs, going on to join French club Racing Metro. Matavesi spent two seasons with Premiership club Worcester Warriors before joining Ospreys in 2014, where his play-making abilities made him a firm favourite. He appeared 79 times for the Welsh region over three seasons, scoring 11 tries prior to his move to Kingston Park. In his first season as a Falcon Matavesi appeared 25 times, 22 of which were starts, scoring Premiership tries against Northampton and Wasps.
