Academy head coach James Ponton cut a delighted figure following his side’s 19-7 triumph at Sale Sharks on Monday night in front of Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards.
Richards watched on from afar as the Development Team put the Greater Manchester outfit to the sword with a spirited display.
Ponton, who joined academy manager Mark Laycock at Kingston Park back in January, was smiling ear to ear as the Falcons started their Aviva A League North campaign with a win.
Speaking to Falcons TV, Ponton said: “It was a fantastic effort by the boys and I am really pleased with a winning start to the season.
“Our preparation for the game was very good and we came here to do the simple things and do them well, and I felt we did that in the right areas.
“We put a lot of pressure on Sale with a good kicking game and we gained good territory advantage.”
After guiding the first XV to victory against Bristol on Sunday, Richards casted his eyes over proceedings last night.
Richards congratulated the academy duo of Laycock and Ponton as well as the players after the game.
Ponton said: “I think it is fantastic that Dean came to the game as there are a few of the boys trying to stake a claim for a place in the first team.
“For Dean to see the game first hand it is a big thing for the guys and it also backs us up as coaches as A Teams are an important part of a club.”
