Big Two Weeks Ahead: Godman

Monday 17 March 2014

Phil Godman insists Newcastle Falcons have a huge fortnight ahead of them in the Aviva Premiership starting with a trip to Gloucester Rugby this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Newcastle make the long trip to the West Country this weekend before hosting basement club Worcester Warriors the following week.

And despite suffering a 41-18 defeat at home to reigning champions Leicester Tigers in their last Premiership outing, Godman believes his charges can take the positives into Saturday’s contest.

“We now have two huge games against Gloucester and Worcester, and everyone knows the magnitude of these two fixtures,” said Godman, who joined the Falcons last summer.

He added: “Against Leicester the plan was to go out and take the game to them, which is what we did. We put good width on the ball and moved their big pack around.

“Unfortunately, they came back into it and their power game came to the fore, but there were things we can build on.”

Godman shared the kicking duties with rugby league convert Lee Smith, who recently made the switch from Super League to the Aviva Premiership.

Revealing the reason behind the decision for Smith to kick, Godman said: “When we get a penalty and it is not within my range Lee will have a go and he seems comfortable enough with that.

“Lee’s first penalty was right on the edge or probably a bit outside of my range, but he had been practicing all week and said he fancied it.

“He smashed it straight down the middle and it was the best kick I had seen him hit all week, then with the conversion from the touchline against the wind after Scotty Lawson’s try he said he wanted a crack.

“He asked for it so I was not complaining given the angle, the wind and everything else, and in fairness he went pretty close to nailing it.”
