Falcons second row takes positives from entertaining draw against Wasps

A new crowd favourite is rapidly emerging at Kingston Park in the form of Italian lock Josh Furno, with the 25 year old’s athleticism in open play and aerial prowess at the line outs being warmly received by the Falcons faithful.

Displaying both these traits throughout Friday’s Aviva Premiership draw with Wasps, Furno grabbed his third try of the season after finishing off a flowing move that saw Gonzalo Tiesi and Sinoti SInoti involved heavily.

With the numbers barely on the score board, the moniker of “The Towering Furno” was circulating around social media and one that has every chance of developing.

For the player himself though, it was just good to make a contribution to his sides’ match.

“Yeah I was please to score the try, though I’m sure the coaches don’t want to see me out on the wing too much! I like to try and sneak out there though and get involved somewhere other just in the close forwards stuff” said Furno.

With the match ending all square after an exhilarating 80 minutes, Furno shared the thoughts of his director of rugby and team-mates when interviewed in the post-match press conference.

“Yeah, I think we had a really good game, there is a bit of frustration because it was there for the taking and we let Wasps score some soft tries that we could have avoided but overall, I think it was a good performance.”

“They are a really good side with a really physical pack and they did well in the set piece, stealing some line outs and giving us a good contest at the scrum but I think we can be happy with our work, while knowing we have improvements to make.”

Having played in front of a crowd of 7,547 supporters, Furno was also quick to praise the electric atmosphere of Kingston Park in playing its part in an entertaining evening.

“It was really good to have a big crowd at home and we are getting more and more of them. They make a big difference and really help us when we need that little bit extra.”

With nearly 6,000 tickets sold for the Falcons next home match against Leicester Tigers on March 8th already, the club are urging supporters who want to attend to book their tickets early to avoid missing out.

Less than 100 seats remain available for the game, with both the North and South standing terraces also reporting strong sales.
