Falcons Residential Camp Huge Hit With Youngsters

Monday 12 August 2013

Our annual Residential Camp was held at Barnard Castle school from 5th-9th August 2013. Over 70 boys aged 14-17 were in attendance to receive a fantastic week of high quality coaching from the Falcons Community Team and Leeds Rugby Coaching Team.

Alongside the high quality coaching there were some significant appearances by big names in the rugby business. Tuesday saw the Falcons Academy Manager Mark Laycock deliver a session which used game scenarios to improve decision making and cores skills.

On Wednesday British and Irish Lion John Bentley arrived at Barnard Castle to deliver some tackling technique workshops and to speak about his career in both Rugby Union and Rugby League, alongside this Barry McDermott was on hand to coach ball handling skills and give advice on becoming a professional sportsman.

Thursday was a morning of high impact contact training followed by Dean Richards and four Falcons players, Tane Tu’ipulotu, Grant Shiells, Rory Clegg and Kieran Brookes taking the boys through the trials of professional training. They were split into three sessions with Shiells and Brookes taking the forwards into some body position coaching whilst Tu’ipulotu talked the backs through some skills. Clegg delivered a kicking master class to those aspiring Fly Half’s.

Friday was the final day of the camp and the boys were formed into teams. The final games took place on the main pitch at Barnard Castle and saw the weeks skills being put into practice. After eight games of high intensity sevens rugby, the boys were brought inside for a final presentation. Both Leeds Carnegie and Newcastle Falcons awarded their Clubman of the Camp award for the most effort throughout the week and the Superstar of the Week for the boy who had put their skills into practice in the most effective way.

We hope that those attending enjoyed their experience and learnt some valuable lessons!
