Falcons Snap Up Goode

Monday 5 November 2012

Newcastle Falcons have bolstered their squad with the signing of Ospreys second-row James Goode until the end of the season.

Goode, 30, who embarks on his second spell with the northeasterners, adds much needed cover in the engine room with both James Hudson and Carlo del Fava side-lined with respective hand injuries.

Joining the Falcons on loan towards the end of last term, Goode made four appearances during the club’s battle to avoid relegation.

And the 6ft 7” 17st 8lb lineout specialist is set to feature in Friday’s RFU Championship showdown with second-place Nottingham at Kingston Park (kick-off 8pm).

Part of the Grand Slam winning Wales under-21s team of 2003, Goode burst onto the scene with his hometown club Cardiff Blues.

Making 15 appearances for the Blues, Goode earned himself a move to Air New Zealand Cup side Manawatu Turbos in 2007.

After enjoying three successful seasons down under, the Cardiff-born lock returned to his native Wales with the Ospreys in November 2009.

Originally signing a short-term contract with the RaboDirect PRO12 outfit, Goode extended his stay by penning a one-year extension followed by a three-year deal in 2011.

“I am delighted to be back in the North East and I am really excited at the prospect of helping the club gain promotion back to the Aviva Premiership,” Goode told the Falcons’ official website.

“There is a new coaching set-up in place at Kingston Park, and we have the nucleus of last season’s squad, as well as some quality new additions – the club is certainly moving in the right direction now,” he added.

Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said: “James is just what the club needs, and will provide solid cover in the pack with both James Hudson and Carlo del Fava out injured.

“He will certainly add some fire-power as we continue our quest to return to the Premiership.”

Goode will be hoping to feature this Friday when his new club face second place Nottingham at Kingston Park in a top of the table showdown.
