Hitz A Post-Gcse Opportunity At Newcastle Falcons

Thursday 21 August 2014

The Newcastle Falcons HITZ programme offers an exciting alternative for school-leavers considering their next step.

With many experts forecasting a major dip in GCSE grades when they are announced this week, many students across the region will have faced a challenging day finding out if they have attained the grades they need to pursue their chosen courses.

While results day can be a nerve-wracking time it is important to remember there are now many options away from the traditional route of staying at school to study A-Levels.

Young people opening their results envelopes now have more choice than ever for their post-16 education – apprenticeships, traineeships and part-time programmes at college offer diversity and the opportunity to learn about the world of work through a hands-on approach.

The Newcastle Falcons HITZ programme, which is run in partnership with Newcastle College, offers a programme of study to young people looking for an alternative to traditional education.

Based at Kingston Park stadium you will work towards a City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Sport, taking part in sessions in the classroom, on the training pitch and in the gym. The course has a high proportion of practical learning, gaining experience of a range of sports and environments.

Whilst working towards their sports qualification learners will also be able to gain qualifications in Maths, English and ITC, to ensure when they complete the course they have the skills necessary to move into work, an apprenticeship or further education.

Whilst enrolled on the HITZ programme participants will become part of the Falcons family, receiving support from staff and training at the heart of the club. They will eat alongside players and coaches and have the opportunity to receive advice from those who have made it to the top of their profession – an opportunity very few courses can offer.

Participants will also receive braded kit and clothing, have access to Premiership Rugby without having to pay for it and enjoy money-can’t-buy experiences such as playing on the pitch at Twickenham before the Premiership Final.

If you are one of those opening that envelope today who didn’t receive the grades you were hoping for, there are options for you. For more information about the HITZ programme follow @Falcons_HITZ on Twitter or contact HITZ Officer, Sam Shaw-Kew on 0776 4933 300 or email sam.shaw-kew@newcastle-falcons.co.uk.

The HITZ programme will commence on 9th September and run through to June 2015, students will attend Monday – Thursday from 10am to 3pm.
