MacRae Appointed Scotland Sevens Coach

Monday 16 June 2014

Newcastle Falcons today announced that Calum MacRae will be leaving his position as skills and attack coach with the club to take up the role of coach to the Scotland national Sevens side.

MacRae, who joined the Falcons in June 2011, spent four years playing for his national side in the World Sevens, making his final appearance for Scotland during the 2009 World Series.

He now moves back into the shortened form of the game as coach of that side ahead of the 2014-15 HSBC Sevens World Series.

Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Calum to forge his experience of Sevens rugby with the coaching abilities he has showcased during his time with the club.

“The position at Newcastle Falcons was Calum’s first as a coach and to see him step into such a high-profile role so quickly speaks volumes about him, and about the development of our coaches.

“Calum has been a great asset to Newcastle Falcons during his time with the club and we hope to be able to work with him again in future. For now though I am delighted to see him have the opportunity to take on this position which I’m sure will only develop his coaching skills further, and I wish him all the best in his role with the Scottish Rugby Union.”

Speaking of his move, MacRae said: “I’d like to thank Dean and Semore for allowing me to pursue an opportunity to coach international rugby in Scotland.

“Since Alan Tait brought me to the club I’ve been fortunate to work with some great coaches and good people. I’ve gained valuable experience at the coal face of the Premiership and I know that will stand me in good stead for the challenge ahead.

“We have a very hard working group of players and I’m sure that John, Steady and Dave will get the best out of the squad and surprise a few people this year! I’d also like to thank the Falcons fans for their continued support of the club during my time in the North East.”
