Mayhew Relishing Kingston Park Return

Tuesday 22 October 2013

Michael Mayhew is relishing his return to Kingston Park with London Irish this Sunday as the Exiles go toe to toe with Newcastle Falcons in the Aviva Premiership (kick-off 3pm).

The 26-year-old hooker, who played 30 times for the Falcons during a two year stint on Tyneside is set to don the green and white of Irish against his former employees.

And although the robust front-rower will not be locking horns with his older brother Richard, who is currently side lined with a leg injury, Mayhew junior admits there will be some sibling rivalry come the weekend.

“I’ve been having some good natured banter with Richard on the phone during the week, but it will be nice to come back to Newcastle to see a few familiar faces,” said Mayhew.

“It’s a shame that I won’t be able to go head to head with Richard, but on a personal note I just hope that I can get sufficient game time.

“You just have to look at what the Falcons have achieved so far this season to realise that it’s going to be a difficult challenge for us, and it’s important that we front up physically,” he added.

Moving on loan to the Londoners at the back end of last season, Mayhew signed on a permanent basis in the summer as the Falcons welcomed Scott Lawson to the club.

Mayhew reveals he is enjoying his new lease of life at the Madejski Stadium, saying: “The boys have been very welcoming down here, and I’ve loved every minute of my time at Irish.

“My season has been hampered slightly by injury, but I’m now raring to go.”
