Thursday 23 May 2019

George McGuigan has been named Newcastle Falcons’ Player of the Season for 2018-19 following Thursday’s annual awards night, sponsored by Pulman Volkswagen.

The well-attended function at Kingston Park Stadium saw the club acknowledging their top performers, hooker McGuigan taking the Ken Lockerbie Trophy just two days after signing a new long-term contract with the club.

Scrum-half Sonatane Takulua was awarded Players’ Player of the Season after a campaign in which he kicked the Falcons to victory at St James’ Park – captain Will Welch presenting the award.

Just weeks after scoring on his Premiership debut at Gloucester, hooker Jamie Blamire was named Academy Player of the Season, the former England Under-20s international showing his versatility with a number of impressive outings in the back row.

Try of the Season went to scrum-half Michael Young, who rounded off a length-of-the-field effort in the away game at Gloucester three weeks ago.

Tom Penny took the Community Player of the Season prize for his tireless work promoting the game around the region, while Clubman of the Year went to Falcons great Doddie Weir in honour of his momentous fundraising efforts for Motor Neurone Disease.
