Northumberland Club Connections success

Falcons Community successfully worked with Gosforth Central Girls, helping the transition from school to club rugby at Northern FC.

The Northumberland Club Connection project is simple.

Falcons Community aims to support Northumberland clubs in a way that is specific to each individual club, to make a big impact. We seek to provide co-ordinated “boots on the ground” support, which is required after the changes in the rugby development landscape after Covid.

Since September, this programme has delivered over 375 hours and seen over 1,200 students across Northumberland. Falcons Community wants to help make the transition from school to club rugby a smooth and easy process, as well as working with specific age-group coaches to develop coaching knowledge.

In February, our community development officer Chris Ure worked with Gosforth Central Girls, with a fantastic 15 girls attending our transition session at Northern FC. Of those, four have started attending Northern FC training sessions regularly, and attended an Under-13s match-day festival at Kingston Park.

Chris said: “I have only been working in the school for six weeks, and most of the girls have had zero experience of rugby. It was very impressive how much all the girls engaged with the sport, and how much they improved.

"The girls that came to the club session were fantastic, showing great energy and enthusiasm.

"Thanks to the support of Gosforth Central teachers and Northern RFC Girls who have been supportive throughout, it has been a smooth transition.”
