Exciting talent Scott Wilson and England Under-20s coach Ian Peel have spoken to Falcons TV for the first time since Wilson’s selection for the IRB Junior World Championship in France.
The mobile prop, 19, is part of Peel’s 28-man squad that will kick-off their campaign against hosts France on 5 June.
“I am delighted to have got the call-up and I am very much looking forward to the opportunity of testing myself at a high level,” Wilson told Falcons TV.
“I was actually watching TV at home when I got the call from Peely [Ian Peel],” added Wilson.
Peel, who played for the Falcons in the front-row for just under 10 years, has been impressed with Wilson’s attitude during his progression through the ranks at Kingston Park.
Making his Falcons senior bow against Cross Keys in the British and Irish Cup earlier this term, Wilson has gone on to feature in a string of Championship matches of late as the season comes to an exciting climax.
He said: “Scott has already played for England Under-20s in the Six Nations this season, and he brings huge desire and power to the scrum.
“For a young man who has only just left school and has done as well as he has done in the Championship matches he has played this season is fantastic, and hopefully he can take that form into the Under-20s World Cup,” he added.
Peel admits Wilson’s development has flourished under the tutelage of experienced director of rugby Dean Richards.
“He [Wilson] has progressed massively under Dean Richards, and his conditioning has taken another leap on from where he was as a schoolboy 12 months ago to where he is now.
“If he carries on in the same vein we will be seeing him getting named in the British Lions squad in four years’ time,” said Peel.
Newcastle scrum coach Micky Ward echoed those sentiments, and reveals it is a joy to work with the youngster, adding: “Scott has everything he needs to progress to a high level in the game, and there is no better young prop in the country.
“He is easy to work with and he can only get better under the top-class coaches we have at Kingston Park.”
