Pilgrim Pens New Deal

Newcastle Falcons scrum-half Chris Pilgrim has signed a contract extension the club can confirm.

Pilgrim, 27, who joined from Nottingham in the summer of 2009, made his Falcons bow against Leicester Tigers during the 2009-10 campaign and has since gone on to make 56 appearances for the North East club.

After starting the first two RFU Championship matches of the 2012-13 season, Pilgrim’s campaign was cut short after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the 49-32 victory at London Scottish in September 2012.

However, following a rigorous rehabilitation programme the Birkenhead-born No.9 was back in contention for selection in time for the end of season play-offs, and made his comeback as a replacement against Leinster ‘A’ in the British and Irish Cup final.

Pilgrim said: “I am delighted to be staying with the club and being a northern lad it means a lot to me to represent Newcastle Falcons.

“After a tough year personally, I am excited at the prospect of competing for the No.9 jersey again.”

Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said: “Chris is a talented scrum-half and I am delighted that he has committed his future to the club.

“When he sustained his injury at the start of last season we thought that he would be out for the rest of the campaign, but his work rate in the gym and desire to get back to full fitness for the final few matches is testament to his professional character.
