Experienced centre joins the ranks of players signing on for more at Kingston Park
Newcastle Falcons are pleased to announce that Adam Powell has become the latest player to commit to the club after signing a new two year deal which will keep him in the North East until at least 2017.
Having originally moved to the region from Saracens in March 2013, Powell played a key role in helping the Falcons achieve promotion during the latter part of that season and has become a regular in the first XV.
Speaking of his new contract, the 28 year old said: “It’s good, I’m happy to have signed for another two years and I’m really enjoying it here at the moment so I’m glad to stay.”
As one of the first signings made by Dean Richards after his arrival at Kingston Park, Powell has been a key figure in the Falcons’ efforts to rise back to the top of English rugby and is satisfied with the project's progress to date.
“Things have gone to plan so far; we got promoted in the first year, stayed up last year and we’ve improved this year. As we showed at the weekend we’ve still got a lot of improving to do but I believe in this and hopefully we’ll keep improving.”
Originally signed on a short term deal until the end of the 2013-14 season, Powell has gone on to make 52 appearances for the club to date, becoming an integral member of the squad both on and off the field.
“I’ve racked up the games while I’ve been here which is nice. That was one of the big things about coming here was that I love playing every week and want to do that.
“This is a really competitive squad so I feel very fortunate to play as much as I have. I do feel a bit like part of the furniture now but as long as I can keep helping us to kick on a bit then that’s the most important thing.
“I guess I’m one of the senior players now; I like rugby, I have opinions on it and I don’t mind giving my opinion but there are a few of us like that.
“I think part of me coming here for Dean was for me to be a voice. I’ve been around some good people before and I think Dean wanted me to bring that to the team. Hopefully I have and hopefully that will really contribute to us kicking on.”
Now well and truly settled in the North East, Essex-born Powell has found a home away from home in Newcastle. “I really enjoy living up here, it’s a lovely place to live and a good place to be. For me personally I just want to keep enjoying my rugby, keep playing well and hopefully keep moving this club forward and being a part of it.
The Falcons have made their ambitions for the coming years very clear, and Powell is committed to reaching those goals.
“For the club though the next couple of years will be an important phase of this plan and we really need to kick on and make sure that we keep on an upward curve.
“Obviously we need to keep working hard and improving and keep trying to get better but the next couple of years is going to be important and I’m really excited to be involved in it.”
Director of Rugby Dean Richards added: “Adam is a key member of the squad and we’re very pleased to be keeping him at the club for another two seasons. He is an influential figure both on and off the field and has a big part to play in our continual drive to progress the club.”
