Dean Richards hailed Mark Wilson’s man-of-the-match display following his side’s 29-0 victory over Newport Gwent Dragons in the LV= Cup.
Wilson was making his 100th appearance for Newcastle Falcons, and it was an occasion that will live long in the memory for the Cumbrian back-row.
Touching down twice in the first half, the 24-year-old was in superior form to scoop the champagne following the match.
“Mark played well and deserved his man-of-the-match award and I’m happy with the way the game went,” said Richards.
“We had the wind behind us in the first half, and it was quite strong – we played well in the first half and in the right areas of the field and we got the three tries that we wanted.
“In the second-half a couple of tries went begging and we had to wait until the last few minutes for the fourth try, but when you’re attacking from close in like we were in the first you take your chances easier.
“We had to play from further out in the second half and we had to work a lot harder. We missed at least three chances which we should have nailed – but on the whole I’m happy with the day,” he added.
The Dragons were a tough proposition for Richards’ men despite the northeasterners sealing a bonus point win. Debutant Gonzalo Tiesi and new boy Sinoti Sinoti each had solid outings in preparation for next weekend’s trip to Bath Rugby in the Aviva Premiership.
“Newport have been playing some really good rugby this year and have been doing so all season,” said the Falcons boss.
He added: “They came out and they played their part and really contributed to all areas of the game.”
The Falcons’ next home game is against Northampton Saints in the Aviva Premiership on Sunday 23 February with tickets still available by calling 0871 226 6060 or click here to purchase online (kick-off 3pm).
