Richards Salutes Debutants Following Bucharest Triumph

Monday 14 October 2013

Dean Richards was satisfied with his side’s winning start to their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign following a narrow 13-12 victory at Bucharest Wolves.

The Falcons were far from their best and had a number of clear-cut opportunities to put the game to bed, but director of rugby Richards reserved special praise for his three young guns who were making their senior bow. Sean Brown, Harrison Collins and George McGuigan were each handed starts in the Romanian capital.

“I was pleased with Sean, Harrison and George and I thought they played exceptionally well,” said Richards.

“I was a little disappointed we didn’t control the game in the way we should have done, and we missed several opportunities to score in the second half – it was a bit of an error strewn game in that respect,” he added.

The Romanian outfit, who had many individuals in their ranks vying for a spot in the national team, put up a fight against the Falcons only to come up short in the last minute when Tom Catterick slotted home a penalty.

Richards said: “I think their [Bucharest] physicality was very good, but had we taken our opportunities we might have been talking about a slightly difference game.

“The one thing you know when you come to places like this is that the opposition will be totally committed on home soil with their typical Latin approach to the game.

“You know that they are going to be difficult to beat, but you must take your opportunities in attack. The pleasing thing is that we are creating the chances, and it’s a matter of finishing them off.

“All in all the weekend was a great experience for the younger guys,” added the Falcons chief.
