Russell Previews Quins

Head coach Peter Russell is relishing this Saturday’s Aviva Premiership trip to Harlequins as Newcastle Falcons aim to get back to winning ways in the league (kick-off 3pm).

The Kiwi coach watched on as his side succumbed to a 24-6 defeat at the hands of Bath Rugby last weekend despite his side holding the West Countrymen 3-3 at the break.

Quins currently sit fourth in the table knowing that victory over Dean Richards’ men could move them above Bath into third. But the former Hawke’s Bay boss believes the Falcons have what it takes to leave the capital with the spoils.

“We know that we can play some good rugby, and the important thing for me is that we play in the right areas of the field,” said Russell.

“Harlequins are a very spritely side who like to move the ball around and hold onto the ball for long periods of the game.

“To nullify that we need to make sure that we bring our defensive game to the table,” he added.

The last fortnight has seen the likes of Dom Barrow and Sinoti Sinoti sustain ankle injuries that will keep them out for some time. Whilst the Falcons have been dealt a double blow, Russell insists it is a chance for other individuals to stake a claim for a starting jersey.

“We’ve picked up a few injuries here and there over the course of the season and when that happens it’s how you react as a team,” said Russell.

“Injuries to key players can open the door for other guys to step in and perform, and that’s the case now,” added the New Zealander.

The Falcons’ next home game against Northampton Saints in the Aviva Premiership on Sunday 23 February (kick-off 3pm). Tickets are still available by calling the Falcons Ticket Hotline on 0871 226 6060 or click here to purchase online.
