Andy Saull's hoping for a repeat display in Italy this weekend

Saull Delighted To Be Back In The Mix

Man-of-the-match during his side’s comfortable Amlin Challenge Cup win at home to Cammi Rugby Calvisano last weekend, Andy Saull is hoping for a repeat performance when the northeasterners visit the Peroni Stadium this Saturday.

The former England Saxon flanker, 25, was in fine fettle for the Falcons last time-out with his audacious assist to Chris York for the fourth try capping off an impressive performance.

“I did what I normally do, running around and trying to bring energy to the side,” said Saull, who has been forced to watch on from the sideline in recent months following a string of injuries.

“I feel like I’m coming into a bit of form, but there are no excuses about rustiness because I have played two 80 minutes for Tynedale as well as the Calvisano game,” he added.

Saull, who hails from London, admits the valuable game time gained with local outfit Tynedale has helped his road back to fitness.

“Playing for Tynedale has been useful, and they have been great with me,” he said.

He added: “You can be as fit as you like in the gym or in training, but playing games is the only way to get your match-fitness up.

“Nothing replaces that, and getting two games in a very skilful and competitive league like National One was invaluable.”

Expecting a tougher contest within the district of Lake Garda, Saull said: “Sides like Calvisano are notoriously more difficult to beat on their own patch than they perhaps are away from home and in front of their own fans it could be a different game.

“They will have a lot of pride about that, and they have players who can damage you. The fly-half Kelly Haimona has a massive boot as he showed at Kingston Park and if we take our eye off the ball they are dangerous.”

Whilst the Falcons have back-to-back away games to contend with, preparations are in full flow at Kingston Park in the build-up to the Aviva Premiership clash with London Wasps on Friday 27 December (kick-off 7.45pm).

Tickets are still available for the game by calling the Falcons Ticket Hotline on 0871 226 6060 or click here to purchase online.
