Training and bonding as Falcons go back to college

Sunday 17 July 2016

Newcastle Falcons’ pre-season preparations are set to crank up a notch when the squad spends a week at Bishop Burton College.

Starting on Monday July 25 the club’s players and coaches will head to the Yorkshire countryside where they will train and stay at the college, which is renowned among other things for its agricultural and equine departments.

Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said: “The geographical isolation and quality of facilities we will experience at Bishop Burton College are perfect for the purposes of this training camp.

“Our players have had four good weeks of work since returning for pre-season but going away will allow us to live as a group, with everything that entails.

“It will be a concentrated period during which we can get plenty of work in, but also an ideal means by which to bond the group further. As well as the day-to-day training and conditioning we will have plenty of social activities, and a big part of it is building that team ethic which is so important during the season.”

Having already seen significant gains from his squad during their initial month of pre-season, Richards said: “The lads have been working hard and our signings are settling in well. We have two new strength and conditioning coaches in Lewis Williams and Tim Payne who are bringing different attributes to the role, and in that sense it has been pleasing.

“However, we are well aware that every club will be saying the same kinds of things at this time of year. Nobody has won or lost any league games yet and it is not really saying a lot to come out and state that the lads are training well. Everything is about the games and only then will we have a true gauge of where we are, but for the time being we are doing the right things and making sure the foundation is laid for the challenges which lie ahead.”
