Back row Mark Wilson says he and his team-mates will get an idea of how their pre-season has gone on Saturday, as Newcastle Falcons face Nottingham at the Northern Echo Arena in Darlington.
In the first of three pre-season fixtures, Wilson expects to learn where they are strong and where they need to improve ahead of the Aviva Premiership season starting at home to Sale Sharks on Friday September 2.
Speaking to Falcons TV, Wilson said: “We’re really excited for this weekend and the first game is coming around quite quick. You don’t really know where you are at as a team or what you need to work on until that first game, so everyone is anticipating getting out there on Saturday and having a good old blow-out.”
While Saturday marks the first 15-a-side action of the summer, the club’s 7s squad will also be in action on Sunday as they head to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry for the finals of the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s.
It was a trophy the Falcons last lifted in 2011 when Wilson was a part of that squad, and he says this year’s 7s team shares similarities with the one which emerged victorious five years ago.
Wilson said: “We went in as underdogs and shocked a few teams the way we played. Some of our mental attributes got us through and the team we have this weekend with the likes of Dan Temm and Harrison Orr typify that as well, so it will be interesting to see how they go.”
