Welch backs Falcons to be at their Sunday best

Newcastle Falcons will be playing the game and not the occasion when London Irish visit Kingston Park Stadium on Sunday, according to captain Will Welch.

The battle between the bottom two sides in the Aviva Premiership could go some way to ensuring the Falcons’ top-flight survival should they record a home victory, Welch insisting their best chance of doing so involves the team calmly executing their roles.

The open-side flanker said: “I think it’s pretty obvious the size of the game, what it is and what it will mean in terms of the table. It’s a game that as a group we’re looking forward to rather than going into our shells.

“You don’t really have to explain to the boys how big a game it is and how big it is for the club. It’s just making sure we’re focused and not too relaxed. Everyone’s got to be on-page and know their jobs. That’s probably the benefit of having a long week – you can get your analysis in, pinpoint what you want to do and get some work in as well.”

Welch added: “As players you want to play in the high-pressure games and get stuck in. I think that’s our mind-set this week, to concentrate on ourselves and get our own house in order. We’re at home, which is an advantage for us as well.

“We’ve got to be accurate and disciplined. They have their own threats of course, but if we look after our own house it should set a good platform to get the win.

“You’ve got to understand the situation and what the game is, but then again when it comes to Sunday you’re just playing another rugby game. You can’t think of the bigger picture. If we do that and we’re nice and focused on doing our job right, the the bigger picture will look after itself.”

Not shirking the fact that his side could take a major step towards retaining top-flight rugby with victory over the Exiles in the 3pm kick-off, Welch said: “As a player you want to play at the top level – that’s the biggest thing for anyone.

“We do our job on Sunday and we’ll go a step closer to staying in the Premiership, which is our ultimate aim. I’m sure the boys will lay everything on the line on Sunday.”
