Wilson: Junior World Cup 'Highlight Of Career'

Wednesday 10 July 2013

An RFU Championship winners’ medal with Newcastle Falcons as well as playing a key role in helping England Under-20s win the IRB Junior World Championship trophy, it is fair to say that hot prospect Scott Wilson has had a 2013 to remember.

Making his Falcons senior bow alongside fellow academy product Zach Kibirige in a 52-5 victory over Cross Keys in the British & Irish Cup back in October, Wilson went on to make 15 appearances for the Kingston Park club last term albeit 12 of those outings were off the bench.

Now the talented tight-head, who captained Sedbergh School before inking professional terms with the northeasterners, is keen to kick-on under the watchful eye of Falcons chief Dean Richards.

“It’s been a great season for me and winning the Junior World Cup is a career highlight, but I just want to take this season’s achievements as a stepping stone and my aim is to get my head down and keep improving my game,” said Wilson.

Reflecting on his summer with the England Under-20s set-up in France, Wilson added: “I was pleased with the way that we performed and we thoroughly deserved to win the competition as we stuck together as a group and stuck to our game-plan.

“It’s nice to be straight back into pre-season training even if it is a gruelling schedule and everyone looks in good shape at the moment.

“I think some of the coaches have been surprised at how well some of the lads have done since reporting back for pre-season.”

Falcons favourite Micky Ward, who is scrummaging coach at Kingston Park, has lavished praised on the burgeoning talents of the exciting young prop.

He said: “Scotty is a good player and without wanting to put too much pressure on him he does remind me of Carl Hayman.

“By that I don’t mean to say he is going to be the next Carl Hayman or anything.

“What I mean is he goes about his work quietly, he has good technique and is a really strong lad. He is going to get better with ever week and with every game he plays.

“He is a top prospect and a really good bloke to work with.”
