Richards disappointed with Sandy Park loss

The director of rugby said after the Sandy Park clash: “We are disappointed with it, to be honest.

“We started off well but, even in that first half, we were inaccurate to the point where we allowed them back into the game.

“We should have taken more of our try-scoring opportunities and, had we done so, we would have been a couple scores up at half-time. That would have been more of a measure of where we were, and was ultimately what caused us to lose the game.”

Playing with a gale behind them in the first half but struggling to make inroads during the second 40, Richards said: “Yes the wind was strong, but it was strong for both teams and you have got to make the most of it.

“We had too many kicks which went straight into touch, too many unforced errors and we tried to force the offload on too many occasions.

“Against a side as good as Exeter if your attack isn’t accurate enough they will keep hold of the ball, and they are happy to do that for 20 or 30 phases.

“Exeter are a very good and incredibly patient side. They just keep the ball, keep playing and eventually find a chink in your armour. That’s what they did today, and they are very good at it.”

Preparing now for the visit of Saracens to Kingston Park on Sunday March 5, he added: “Saracens will be a difficult challenge, but who better to get up for than the champions at home?

“The boys love tests like that, we know what we are up against and it will be an interesting battle.”
